50 best reggae songs of 2012

0

This year I decided to make a huge roster spanning no less than 50 tracks, mainly for two reasons – it’s been a great year for reggae and dancehall and I also wanted to present a roster featuring several different styles – dancehall, dubstep, a Drop and UK steppers are all included in the list.

The list includes mostly Jamaican artists, while the producers come from Europe, the United States and Jamaica. You will also notice the inclusion of a lot of dancehall. This has been a successful year for electronic dancehall, bouncy and fun.

As you go through the list, you will probably notice that Tarrus riley is still the artist running the show. On the production side Frenchie of Maximum Sound is perhaps the most reliable and consistent producer and all of their 2012 riddims are included in the list.

Singers are rare. It’s a shame, but this is sadly what the reggae industry looks like. A riddim album usually contains about ten tracks, and of these, one, or at most two, are written by female artists. This has been the case for years and there is no indication of a change in the near future.

The songs are presented in no particular order and I only selected songs released as singles, from riddim albums or compilations, that is to say without artist albums.
